MANAGING PEOPLE

LESSONS FROM BASKETBALL

Managing people is one of the hardest jobs there is and most of us are never properly trained for it. This book doesn’t pretend leadership is easy. It doesn’t hand you slogans or empty motivation. Instead, it walks you through real situations to help you think clearly, act intentionally, and lead people with confidence and respect.

About the Author

Larry J Washington

Larry J. Washington didn’t learn leadership from theory alone. He learned it through decades of real responsibility. With more than thirty-five years in business and senior leadership roles including Vice President and Assistant Vice President, Washington has led teams through growth, pressure, change, and uncertainty. His career began in pharmacy and evolved into corporate management, giving him a rare blend of technical discipline and people-centered leadership. Outside the office, one constant shaped his thinking, college basketball. Years of watching the game revealed patterns that felt strikingly familiar. Coaches adjusting strategies. Players responding to pressure. Teams succeeding or failing based on chemistry, communication, and trust. This workbook grew from that realization. Washington writes with honesty, humility, and respect for the people doing the work. He believes great managers are made, not born and that self-awareness is the most underrated leadership skill of all. The book is dedicated to his family, the managers who influenced him, the game of basketball, and his faith. Each of which shaped his understanding of leadership and service.

About the Book

MANAGING PEOPLE

Most management books talk at you. This one works with you. This is a practical book built around 37 short chapters, each pairing a basketball concept with a real-world management challenge. The goal isn’t to turn you into a sports fan, it’s to give you a clearer way to see what’s happening on your team and how to respond. By the end, readers aren’t just better informed, they’re more intentional about their goals, their habits and their impact on others. This isn’t about playing the perfect game. It’s about learning how to stay steady, thoughtful, and human no matter the score.
